Five Signs Your Mazda’s Water Pump Is Going Bad

The water pump is a crucial cooling system part. It circulates the coolant through the engine to ensure that it never overheats. The water pump lasts 100,000 miles on average. If you drive an older Mazda, it’s possible that your water pump has gone bad if you notice any of the signs of a bad water pump below. Mazcare is here to help, so don’t worry. We can replace your faulty water pump.

1. A Water Pump That Is Corroded

Corrosion is a telltale sign that your water pump is going bad. The corrosion is being caused by coolant that is slowly leaking out of the water pump. The coolant leak isn’t bad enough to drip on the garage floor. Rather, the coolant just pools around the pump and rusts it. Eventually, the rust will begin to eat through the water pump.

2. Leaking Coolant on the Garage Floor

When this happens, or when the seals wear out, you will end up with coolant on the garage floor. The engine coolant could be any color from red to green. Check the coolant’s color when your engine is cold to identify it if it is leaking. Engine coolant can absolutely leak out of an old and dying water pump.

3. Coolant That Isn’t Circulating Through the Engine

As we mentioned above, the water pump works hard to make sure the coolant circulates through the engine. If there is a problem with the coolant’s circulation, the water pump is the likely culprit. If you suspect your coolant isn’t circulating through the engine as it should be, bring your car, truck, or utility vehicle to our shop. We’ll test the coolant’s circulation to see if there is a problem.

4. Grinding Noises Coming From the Engine

Another indication that the water pump is having problems is grinding sounds coming from the engine. The water pump can growl when it is worn out and no longer able to do its job effectively. You might also hear squealing noises coming from the accessory belt if it is too loose. The water pump is attached to this belt to receive the power it needs to circulate the engine coolant.

5. An Engine That Overheats Constantly

Finally, a malfunctioning or leaking water pump will affect the engine’s temperature. Little to no coolant will cause the engine to overheat every time you drive your Mazda.
